Hang Gliding from
High Rock MD,
just North of Pen Mar Park and the PA/MD State line
The former hang gliding launch site is located on High Rock Road at the Mason Dixon Line in Cascade MD, at an altitude of about 1400 feet.
Since 9/11, it seems that hang gliding is no longer permitted here unless a special waiver is granted. We found only one instance, in Oct. 2002, when the authorities permitted such a waiver for hang gliding, but only for the weekend of Oct 5-6. (If anyone can confirm or furnish more information, please tell the webmaster so this page can be updated.)
Pen Mar Park is located at 11400 Pen Mar High Rock Rd, Cascade MD 21719. Hang gliding enthusiasts found that "High Rock" was high enough. The photos below apparently were taken 2003 or earlier. High Rock hang gliding images were difficult to find.
Apparently the nearest hang gliding club is hynerclub.com, Hynerview PA. More information, directions, and some YouTube videos at hyner club website.
