Red Run Park
Rouzerville PA
Red Run
Park in Rouzerville PA,
the oldest park owned by Washington Township,
is a 22-acre park that was presented to the Borough of Waynesboro in 1938; it became
the property of Washington Township in 1969. The 11 usable acres in this park
are essentially complete at this time. The park consists of a man-made lake,
picnic areas, playground equipment, public restrooms, concession stand, and miniature
train. The lake closed for swimming in the 1970’s, and has been used for fishing
and ice skating since that time and is a very popular year-round spot. (Red
Run abuts Pine Hill Regional Recreation Area--you can read about the latter
at this link.)
The park was revitalized during the 1980’s
with monthly entertainment, more equipment, and a footbridge across the creek
into a new area of the park. Further development resulted in three major
annual community events, more picnic pavilions, special needs fishing pier and
ramp to the pier, and installation of a miniature train, tunnel and station (the Red Run
Express). This train was previously operated at Cold Springs Park from the
late 1920’s to 1970’s, and was installed at Red Run Park as part of the
effort to save a unique portion of local history.
The Red Run Express is scheduled to run every Saturday, Sunday, and holiday between Memorial Day and Labor Day from 1 to 5 pm, weather permitting and volunteers being available. If you can help operate the Red Run Express or help at the train station, contact Sandy Smith at the Township office, 762-3128.
